Who we are

Mission Statement

The mission of the St. Lawrence Co-operative Day Care is to provide a high quality and nurturing child-centred program that reflects the needs of the individual child. Our enriched program reflects the diversity of our community.

Philosophy

St. Lawrence Co-operative Day Care Incorporated believes children learn through play. Play is the cornerstone where children have the opportunity to actively explore and learn through materials and their environment. Play facilitates the development of the whole child including, social, emotional, physical, cognitive and creative abilities. In order for children's play to be meaningful, the experiences need to reflect each child's skills and needs.

The Centre is committed to offering a high quality, child centered program that provides for children's success in learning. St. Lawrence Co-operative Day Care strives to provide quality care for all children, regardless of race, ethnicity, financial situations, gender and family structure. All children are entitled to the same level of service, care and hours of operation. The program involves children, parents, teachers working together in an anti-bias and integrated environment. This teamwork promotes children's abilities to resolve conflicts, understand mutual respect, gain independence and build self-esteem. These abilities are also encouraged by teachers modeling and encouraging socially acceptable behaviour where children are supported to self-regulate and develop positive relationships. The children's environment is structured with routines and transitions in order to provide consistency and security. This flexibility facilitates decision making and free choice which is incorporated in the program on a daily basis.

The teacher's role in the program is to assist, support and guide the children while maintaining a safe, stimulating, nurturing and culturally diverse environment. These goals are accomplished by the teacher's training, knowledge and experience in observing, gathering resources and sharing information with parents and co-workers. Teachers then use this information to plan and implement a program and environment that is age appropriate, interesting and meets both individual and group needs.

As a Co-operative day care centre, families, teachers and management maintain open and ongoing communication to ensure the child's developmental needs are met. It is important that families are familiar with the centres By-laws and contribute to the ongoing stability of the day care centre. Parents are encouraged to share information with teachers, participate in curriculum and volunteer in the program as needed. St. Lawrence Co-operative Day Care Incorporated is committed to being an active and viable member of the St, Lawrence community.

Staff

Each centre operates with a Program Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor in addition to a team of full time and part time staff, cook/caterer , cleaning staff and a book keeper that oversees the financial aspects of all three centres.

All full time Early Childhood Educators have completed their diploma from a College and are Registered with the College of ECE. Teachers are trained to nurture and care for each child and facilitate learning opportunities for developmental areas. The Centre also provides workshops and professional development opportunities to enhance the children's learning environment.

Programming

The teaching staff in each room prepares a daily Program Plan based on observations of children's developmental skills and interests. The areas of learning include: arts and crafts, sensory, drama, language, cognitive and manipulative, construction, science/nature and cooking, plus areas of interest more specific to each centre: computer, homework club, knitting, etc. Each Program Plan is posted and accessible to parents, parents are welcome to read the Program Plan in order to view the activities that are planned throughout the day. An Outdoor Program Plan is also provided to promote learning in the outdoor environment.

Meals and Snacks

The Centre provides one morning snack, one afternoon snack, and a hot lunch everyday. The menu is posted at each centre, and encourages a variety of cultural foods. All menus meet the Canadian Food Guide, Day Nurseries Act and guidelines of the City of Toronto Operating Criteria

Parent Involvement

As a Co-operative parents are encouraged to contribute by becoming a board member, and/or by helping on various committees, for example fundraising, maintenance, political lobbying, etc. Parents are required to attend the Centre's annual General Members Meeting and contribute volunteer hours as needed or as your schedule permits.
